I’ve been focusing on my dog commissions this month and contemplating which breeds I have already painted. I seem to have had a number of smooth coated dogs which is fun to paint but comes with it’s challenges.
It is all about the shine and highlights on the dog’s coat to portray the features and to get a likeness.
I use graduations of shine to get the definition into the dog’s fur and paint the blocks of shapes and then smooth them and merge the shine with a softer brush.
This month I have painted a beautiful working cocker spaniel and a pastel of a lurcher. This is the same process but instead of a brush to smooth, I use my finger to smudge.
Here are some examples of other dogs where I have used similar techniques.
